Our Artist Hub will have workshops for all different skill levels and interests. Our programs are geared towards introducing different disciplines to the community, bringing young and old together to celebrate tradition with hands-on learning.
Clay Sculpture Workshop
Clay Animal Dodems: Traditional & Contemporary (1 Day)

This one day workshop is designed to bring together YOUTH AND ELDERS from the community. To share our cultural knowledge with one another and to learn some clay sculpture techniques along the way.
This hands-on workshop is meant for 10-12 participants who don’t mind getting their hands dirty! We will bring in a traditional knowledge keeper to share a story about the cultural significance of dodems/clan animals and how they are used in contemporary society. Clay is a tactile medium directly from mother earth and is soft and pliable, this is a medium that is perfect for the young and old. In this one day workshop participants will be introduced to a variety of hand tools to mold, shape and create detail in their animal dodems.
At the end of the workshop, participants will get a chance to share their artwork and what they liked most about the clay workshop.

Timber Frame Workshop

This is a hands-on weekend workshop designed to teach the students the fundamentals of structural timber framing. This workshop is designed to accommodate 6-8 participants. Students will learn how to do all the layout by drawing everything full size on the floor. No math involved!
This workshop is meant for COMMUNITY MEMBER OF ANY AGE and skill level. We will walk through the process of designing and building a functional mailbox post that participants can install on their own property.
Day 1
introduction, question and answer period, drawing out full size design, introduction to tools, types of joints and methods of fabrication. In the afternoon participants will begin to mark out all pieces and begin cutting to size.Day 2
Continue fabricating pieces and problem solving issues to complete posts. At the end of the day, students will showcase their pieces and we will have a discussion on each piece and the obstacles and problem solving to complete a successful project. -

Permanent installation of dry laid wall on workshop/studio property—identify specific site. This workshop is geared towards community members that have an interest in the specialized trade of stone masonry and can be an introduction to more in depth workshops that will be offered in the future to build skill levels and confidence of participants. This hands-on workshop will introduce the participants to dry laid building methods using “Wiarton Limestone” a naturally abundant resource in our community.
Day 1
Introduction, question and answer period, site identification and wall design, introduction to tools, anatomy of wall structure and building method specifically for the local “Wiarton Limestone”. Layout of walls, preparation of the foundation and the use of batter boards.
Day 2
Continue building walls to completion, add a coping stone course to unify the wall structurally and finish the day by taking group pictures.
At the end of the day students will share their learning experience and we will have a discussion on the obstacles and problem solving used to complete a successful dry laid wall project.
