Solomon and his partner Trinh have 25+ years of experience working in collaborative environments. Many of their projects have diverse project team members; among them include architects, designers, artists, educators and community members. Stone Artisan Studios has completed 10 public art projects ranging in size and complexity.
As an indigenous design, fabrication and construction business, Stone Artisan Studios is among a handful of companies in the Southern Ontario region with a wide range of building and artistic fabrication portfolio. Our strong foundation in stonemasonry combined with specialized sculpture skills make us a one stop studio that can take care of your project from concept to final installation.
Solomon King, BFA
Founder, Principal Artist & Designer
Solomon King is an interdisciplinary artist from Neyaashiinigmiing, ON—home of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Using his passion for community, reverence for craftsmanship and his own Indigenous heritage, Solomon dedicates his life to reviving and celebrating the rich culture of the Anishinaabe-Ojibwe people in his work.
He is a red seal brick and stonemason with a BFA from OCAD University and has undergone specialized training in the visual and building arts. With decades of experience, Solomon has acquired multiple opportunities and jobs that utilize his unique skillsets - whether it be in the heart of Toronto’s art scene or community restorations in his home community.
Within the last ten years, Solomon and his partner Trinh have developed a rich portfolio in public arts; multitude of mixed media pieces created from stone, terra cotta, bronze, mosaic and wood. His most recent and prominent works are featured at Nathan Phillips Square, Spadina Station, and Bedaasige Park Park located within the University of Toronto and the city of Toronto.
Solomon also teaches workshops in visual art, stone masonry, heritage trades and self-employment development. When teaching, Solomon ensures to emphasize the purpose and potential of art and trades in society. He sees these expertises as a pathway to creating beautiful, engaging communal spaces. Whether it is artwork that brings diversity into otherwise metropolitan public spaces or gathering places that promote inclusivity and community building, he strives to create dialogue between all people.
Trinh King, BFA
Founder, Artist & Storyteller
Trinh King is an OCAD university graduate, an artist who specializes in painting, mosaic, and video, and the heart of a business rooted in family. Since the very beginnings of Stone Artisan Studios, Trinh has managed finances, clientele, and marketing while also engineering its conceptual growth. She has played a crucial role in the design of many projects - as well as being the artist behind the mosaic and painting elements. In further support of her belief in creative power, she chose to homeschool her two daughters to nourish their interests in a positive, educational environment. Her role as a mother and co-spearhead of a family business plays an important role in both her collaborative and independent artwork.
Trinh’s early art narrated her unique perspective as a first-generation immigrant to Canada following the aftermath of the Vietnam war. Her first works consisted of video installations - along with other visual pieces - that bring the raw refugee experience to light - a fresh and risky topic in the 1980’s and 90’s. After the birth of her two children, who are of Indigenous and Asian descent, she began to develop her concept of cultural expression within Canada. What if the key to an anti-colonial community was collaboration between peoples of colour? This idea emphasized steering away from colonial hierarchy within the art system and creating a new space where cultural narratives could thrive. Trinh believes that by binding people together through storytelling, we create a community that relishes the importance of understanding each other - and therefore our existence within Canada; which is an important step in the reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
Trinh continues to pursue a route through cultural storytelling both within Stone Artisan Studios and in her independent aspirations; combining her lifelong passion for international films and advocacy work with her decades of experience as a mother and Indo-Vietnamese artist within Canada.
Trinh brings forward a unique picture of what art can be when the world is a mosaic of many cultures and love is the root of all endeavour.
Solomon dedicates his life to reviving and celebrating the rich culture of the Anishinaabe-Ojibwe people in his work.
